Altadena is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Verdugo Mountains in Los Angeles County, California. The name Altadena is a combination of “Alta,” Spanish for “Upper,” and “Dena,” taken from Pasadena. The CDP had a population of 44,850 in the 2019 census.
In the mid-1860s, Benjamin Eaton established waterways from the Arroyo Seco and Eaton Canyon to irrigate his vineyards. The move paved the way for the development of Altadena, Pasadena, and South Pasadena. Eaton did the construction for Dr. John Griffin and B.D. Wilson, who owned Rancho San Pascual.
Wilson and Dr. Griffin hoped to develop and sell the land in a real estate plan called the San Pasqual Plantation. Unfortunately, in 1870, their efforts failed despite Eaton’s irrigation because the land was relatively inaccessible, and only a few believed crops could thrive close to the mountains.
The land where Altadena was located changed hands several times before Capt. Frederick Woodbury purchased 937 acres known as the Woodbury Ranch. His brother, John Woodbury, established the Pasadena Improvement Company in 1887 and planned to develop residential lots known as the Woodbury Subdivision.
The Woodbury brothers contacted Byron O. Clark, who established a nursery in the foothills and had since moved away. Clark called it the “Altadena Nursery,” a name he coined from Spanish “Alta,” meaning “upper,” and “Dena” from Pasadena. Woodbury asked if he could use “Altadena” for his subdivision, and Clark agreed.
