Covina is a Los Angeles County, California, United States, located approximately 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. In the 2020 census, the population was 51,268 people, up from 47,796 in the 2010 census. When the city’s created territory was only one square mile, “One Mile Square and All There” was coined.
On a 2,000-acre plot purchased from the estates of John Edward Hollenbeck, one of Rancho La Puente’s 1842 grantees, Joseph Swift Phillips, founded the city of Covina in 1882. Hollenbeck purchased a bankrupt coffee plantation from three Costa Rican brothers, Pedro Maria Badilla, Julian Badilla, and Pedro Antonio Badilla, in 1875; the latter purchased it from the descendants of Hollenbeck’s co-grantee John A. Rowland, who had purchased it in 1842. These individuals were honored with Badillo Street, Puente Street, Rowland Street, Hollenbeck Avenue in Covina, and Rancho La Puente.
Frederick Eaton, a young engineer, hired by Phillips to investigate the area, came up with Covina. In 1885, Eaton combined the names “cove” and “vine” to name the new settlement Covina, inspired by how the adjacent San Gabriel Mountains’ valleys created a natural cove around the region’s early pioneers’ vineyards.
