Garden Grove is a highly-populated city in northern Orange County, California, approximately 34 miles southeast of Los Angeles City. It had a population of 171,949, according to a 2020 census. The western part of the city is known as West Garden Grove.
Alonzo Cook originally founded Garden Grove in 1874. In the same year, a school district and a Methodist church were organized in the area. Garden Grove remained a small farming community until the arrival of the Pacific Electric Railroad in 1905.
The rail connection helped Garden Grove prosper with the influx of visitors, tourists, and eventually settlers. The town was notable for its crops of walnuts, chili peppers, oranges, and later strawberries.
In 1933, the Long Beach earthquake destroyed most of the town’s central business district. Rapid development followed the post-World War II boom, and the town was incorporated as Garden Grove in 1956, with approximately 44,000 residents.
In 1956, Orange County Plaza, now known as The Promenade, opened at Chapman and Brookhurst. Upon its expansion in 1959, the establishment had 60 stores, including 2 variety stores, 2 supermarkets and a J.C. Penney. It billed itself as the first shopping center in Orange County and its largest.
